Danny Gokey released his first single "It's Only" this morning on 106.1 in Milwaukee. It's a country ballad written by Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood of Lady Antebellum and produced by Mark Bright. Check it out here or on his MySpace:
First impressions (and I do promise that I did give this a fair listen): Danny sounds different. His usually gruff voice sounds kind of airy here, especially in the beginning. It gets better at the end, but it takes too long to get there. The biggest gripe I have about the song is its structure. There's no chorus, and there's no hook. The song itself reminds me of a hook-less "Jesus Take the Wheel". Danny fans will love it, but what I'm interested in seeing is how country fans receive it.

Wow! I was pleasantly surprised. Dare I say that Danny’s single – amongst those idols who have released so far – is the most representative who of he is as an artist? The first thing I thought after I heard it was that it’s Danny - the raspy voice, the soaring parts, the phrasing, the lyrics. I think it’s a song tailor-made for him, which is why I think this single actually works. I have never considered myself a hardcore Danny fan or a Country fan, but this is good work right here. Out of all the songs that have been released from this year’s idols, I actually think this is the best. Wow, who would have thought?
I loved the song; beautiful vocals, nice lyrics and pertinent to the season, just country enough.
I think he shows his versatility here and we will get plenty of power voice, gruff Danny on the album.
Great first debut Danny!
I'm really liking it. Much more than the first three singles we've heard, this isn't produced to death with excess junk thrown into the tracks.
It also really sounds true to Danny's singing style and where he comes from emotionally. Danny has a unique vocal tone, a big range, and a lot of vocal power that not many (any?) male country artists have today. This song lets him really use those abilities with a lot of different levels and textures as the song develops.
The message also lets Danny project a lot of obvious sincerity that country fans and many mainstream audiences will love. Good job.
the - you don't consider yourself to be a hardcore Danny fan? Funny since I've seen your exact comment copied and pasted on at least 5 different websites now.
I absolutely love this song more everytime I hear it! Danny certainly did not let any of his fans down with this one, and I can't wait to hear the rest of the album!
